Viola Wing-Lam Cheung is a Chinese soprano born in Hong Kong. She was awarded the scholarship of Best Student in Concentrated Studies by Hong Kong Baptist University and featured in a music talent documentary by Radio and Television Hong Kong in 2015, before she continued her music studies in the Netherlands. She graduated as a master student from both The Royal Conservatory of The Hague and Codarts Rotterdam, and received vocal coachings and masterclasses from Charlotte Riedijk, Maartje Rammeloo, Eva Maria Westbroek, Frank van Aken, Roberta Alexander, Ira Siff, Luciana Serra and Lynne Dawson.


After her successful debut as Königin der Nacht from Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte in 2017, Cheung toured in 18 cities of the Netherlands and Belgium with the role between 2019 and 2020 with Silbersee and Toneelmakerij. In 2021, she performed as Liu in Puccini’s Turandot with OperaGezelschap Bel Canto alongside Marcel Reijens and Niovi Klavdianou.

With an extended vocal range and timber, Cheung made her voice heard in genres from bel canto to contemporary music. She has performed more than thirty premieres of new compositions, including a leading role in Seconds of Fear by Kaori Neus in the Opera Forward Festival by Dutch National Opera, songs and ensemble works performed in Composers’ Festivals of Amsterdam and Rotterdam, Dag in de Branding Festival, Rewire Festival and November Festival. Cheung was engaged in two country tours with Doelen Ensemble and NKK NXT in 2022. In the same year, she appeared as a soloist in the 70th anniversary of Chinese National Day ceremony in Floriada Expo Amsterdam, and a judge member in the Water Cube Cup Chinese Song Contest Netherlands division 2022.

Cheung was also invited by the International Vocal Competition s’ Hertogenbosch to sing in its Bach concert series , Christmas Concert, as well as masterclasses by renowned vocal pedagogist Margreet Honig, director of Dutch National Opera Studio Rosemary Joshua, countertenor Andrew Watts and director of Danish Opera  John Fulljames. She will be singing the soprano solo in Mahler Symphony no.4 with Hong Kong Baptist University Orchestra and playing the role of La Fée in Massenet’s French opera, Cendrillon, in the Opera Performance Studio of Trentino Music Festival 2023.
