Viola Cheung 

Lyric Coloratura Soprano

Viola Cheung is a soprano born in Hong Kong, featured in the Radio Television Hong Kong music talent documentary Young Music Makers in 2015.  She has appeared as the Königin der Nacht in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte across eighteen cities in the Netherlands and Belgium.  After singing Liù in Puccini’s Turandot in the Netherlands and La Fée in Massenet’s Cendrillon at the Trentino Music Festival in Italy, Viola made her debut at the Dutch National Opera in 2023 as one of the six Mädchen in Kurt Weill’s Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny.

 

Her concert repertoire includes soprano solos in Mahler’s Symphony No. 4, DvoÅ™ák’s Stabat Mater, Vivaldi’s Gloria, Bach’s Johannes-Passion, and various cantatas.  She has also been invited to participate in concerts and masterclasses from the International Vocal Competition of ’s-Hertogenbosch.

With her wide vocal range, distinctive timbre, and stage presence, Viola has performed across genres.  She has sung in more than 30 world premieres, including original vocal soundtracks for the Netflix series Our Oceans narrated by Barack Obama.  She created the roles of The Light and Bernadette in the new operas Seconds of Fear and Goldilocks at the Opera Forward Festival of Dutch National Opera in Amsterdam, and has performed solo and ensemble works at the November Festival, O. Festival, Dag in de Branding Festival, Rewire Festival, and the Composers’ Festivals of Amsterdam and Rotterdam.  She has also toured nationally and internationally with Silbersee, Doelen Ensemble, NKK NXT, and Dutch singer-songwriter Wende Snijders.  Viola was also a guest performer at the 70th Anniversary of Chinese National Day Ceremony at Floriade Expo Amsterdam, and has served as a jury member of the ‘Water Cube Cup’ Chinese Song Contest from 2022 to 2025.

 

Viola holds a Master in New Audiences and Innovative Practice from the Royal Conservatoire The Hague and a Master in Classical Singing from Codarts.  She studied with Charlotte Riedijk, Maartje Rammeloo, Chan Siu Kwan, and Ira Siff, and has participated in masterclasses with Barbara Frittoli, Margreet Honig, Rosemary Joshua, Andrew Watts, Eva-Maria Westbroek, Roberta Alexander, Luciana Serra, Lynn Dawson, and John Fulljames.  She was awarded the Best Student in Concentrated Studies Scholarship by Hong Kong Baptist University in 2013.
