Guzheng
The Chinese Zither
Viola’s childhood instrument, Guzheng, has more than 2000 years of history. The 21 strings zither has distinct yet versatile tone colors and is arguably the most popular traditional Chinese instrument.

In her two years study of Master in New Audience and Innovative Practice, Viola carried out her master research on reviving the Guzheng in modern music theatre settings. Combining with her singing talent, she has brought this ancient instrument to 18 theaters in the Netherlands through an experimental opera tour, De Toverfluit, in collaboration with Silbersee and Toneelmakerij. Continuing the experiments and explorations of extended playing techniques of western influence, Viola is looking forward to more creative collaborations with the instrument in Europe.
